Rihanna made sure fans had an unforgettable night when she made a surprise appearance at Jay-Z’s concert in New York City.
During Jay-Z’s Extra Innings show at Yankee Stadium, Rihanna, 38, took to the stage in the early hours of Monday, July 13, to perform their 2009 hit song, “Run This Town.”
“Y’all know I’m rusty, right? It’s been a while. Y’all with me right now?” she asked the crowd after the performance, according to a fan video posted via X.
Rihanna continued the surprises by performing her 2015 track “Bitch Better Have My Money.”
She addressed the audience one final time before leaving the stage, saying, “I missed this s***, y’all! New York, I love you guys!”
The performance marked a rare occurrence for the “Diamonds” singer, whose last live show was a 90-minute concert in India at the pre-wedding festivities for Indian billionaire heir Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in March 2024.
Before the March 2024 concert, Rihanna gave a rare performance of her greatest hits during the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show.
Rihanna has not released a new album in 10 years, with her most recent being 2016’s ANTI. She did, however, release the original songs “Lift Me Up” and “Born Again” in 2020 for Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack.
In January, a source exclusively told Us that Rihanna has been “working on an album.”
“It’s taken many forms because she’s scrapped a ton of music that she’s made over the years. She basically had an album done at one point, and then she decided to start fresh,” the insider explained of the hold-up, adding that “at no point has she put it aside completely — not even while pregnant or a new mom.”
Rihanna was just one of the many surprises during Jay-Z’s third and final concert at Yankee Stadium. The concert was initially scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, but was delayed after the venue was forced into lockdown when several fans tried to break through security. The concert eventually began at 12:15 a.m. on Monday and ended around 3 a.m.
While on stage, Jay-Z, 56, apologized to fans for the delay and explained there were “like 10,000 people outside, and we closed all the doors, and somebody rushed the door,” according to Page Six.
“They closed the door for you guys’ safety and everyone’s safety outside. I don’t want to start the music and people get trampled,” he said. “I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everyone was OK.”
In addition to Rihanna, Jay-Z surprised the crowd with performances from Pharrell, Teyana Taylor, Usher, Jermaine Dupri and his wife, Beyoncé.
