Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least 11 people and injured dozens more over the past day, according to local authorities.
In Kharkiv Oblast in northeastern Ukraine, five people were killed and 15 were injured in Russian attacks, governor Oleh Syniehubov reported, adding that Russian forces had fired two missiles, five guided aerial bombs, and almost 60 drones at targets across the region.
Strikes reportedly hit the villages of Lypkuvativka, Velykyi Burluk, and Slatyne, as well as the cities of Kharkiv and Balakliia, among other locations.
Two people were also killed and five were wounded following a wave of drone attacks, air strikes, and artillery shelling across the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, per the Kherson Regional State Administration.
“Russian troops struck critical and social infrastructure, as well as residential neighborhoods in the region’s settlements, damaging, in particular, five high-rise buildings and seven private homes,” it said in a statement posted on Telegram. “The occupiers also destroyed administrative buildings, stores, a cell tower, a utility building, a gas pipeline, and private vehicles”.
In Donetsk in the east of the country, one person was killed in the city of Kramatorsk while 13 people were injured across the wider region.
A 51-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were also killed after a guided missile struck a high-rise building in Sumy Oblast in the north, authorities said. A 32-year-old man also died following a drone attack in the region.
The Sumy Regional Military Administration reported 50 attacks on 21 settlements from Friday to Saturday morning, with Russian forces said to have launched drones, mortars, artillery, and guided aerial bombs.
It comes as the Ukrainian air force reported that Russia had fired two “Zircon” missiles from its Kursk region as well as 174 drones at Ukraine overnight.
“According to preliminary data, as of 8 am, air defence forces shot down or neutralized 141 targets,” the force said, adding that strikes had been recorded at 15 locations.
On Saturday, Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command said it had activated air defence measures and scrambled military aircraft in response to Russian drone attacks on Ukraine.
“These measures are preventive in nature and are aimed at securing and protecting Polish airspace, especially in regions adjacent to threatened areas,” it said in a statement.
