Lauren Rucker, the widow of beloved sports reporter Wes Rucker, gave birth to a baby daughter three months after her husband was killed in a car accident.
“Welcome Rosemary Hazen Rucker (Rose)!” Lauren shared via X on Wednesday, May 13. “Bringing her into the world without Wes beside me was heartbreaking and beautiful all at once, but I felt him with us every step of the way.”
Lauren shared photos from her hospital bed, which showed the couple’s son, Hank, holding a picture of his late father.
“Hank is already the sweetest big brother,” Lauren said. “Grateful and blessed by your prayers and support. 💛”
Wes, a fixture in the Tennessee sports scene, died in a car accident in Knoxville on February 19. He was 47 years old.
Lauren released an emotional statement about Wes’ death the following month, saying the loss “left a silence that I don’t quite know how to explain.”
“He was my best friend before anything else,” she wrote. “The person I talked to about everything. The one who understood me without needing explanation. What I find myself missing most are the small things that were just ours — the conversations that no one else heard, the routines that didn’t seem important at the time but somehow meant everything. The way he could bring calm into a moment when I felt overwhelmed. The steadiness he carried so naturally. And the smartassery that was so unmistakably him.”
Lauren added, “He was the most natural dad to Hank — steady, patient (sometimes), playful — the kind of presence that made everything feel okay. Watching them together was one of my greatest joys. And I was so looking forward to seeing him be a girl dad, to watching him love Rose the same way, with his quiet confidence and deep, unwavering care.”
A meal train that was established after Wes’ death is still going strong, with friends and family members volunteering to bring meals to Lauren and her children in the coming weeks. The meal train has raised more than $20,000 since it was established in February.
In addition, a GoFundMe that was organized to support the Rucker family has raised over $781,000 at the time of publication.
“In this recent time of a job transition, Wes did not currently have a life insurance policy,” the fundraiser explained. “All funds raised will go directly toward the ongoing needs of Lauren and the kids in this time of transition and uncertainty. If you feel led to give, any amount will make a difference.
