Staggering cost of raising a child in California revealed, as state tops ‘most expensive’ charts

It costs to raise kiddos on the coast.

Sunshine, surf and seriously steep expenses are on deck for new mommies and daddies in California, which has just been named one of the most pricey places to parent in America  — the land of the free where it takes over $300,000 to raise offspring from infancy to age 18.

The price of calling Cali home comes with more than $80,000 in combined annual demands for couples that are starting families, owing to extreme childcare, maternity healthcare, housing and groceries fees, according to a trending 2026 study via Kendamil, a baby formula brand.

Researchers analyzed the financial burden of each of the four parenting necessities across the country to identify the cheapest and most expensive states for childrearing.

The investigators crowned Washington, D.C.  as the nation’s No. 1 high-ticket hotspot, with mothers and fathers forking over, on average, a staggering $90,046 per year to properly provide for their pups. Massachusetts and California secured the second and third-place positions on the podium, echoing recent data.

Arkansas, however, earned top billing as the most affordable state for moms and dads with annual costs totaling a mere $36,386 — $53,660 less than the amount imposed upon parents in flashier zip codes.

West Virginia trails closely behind Arkansa, boasting a cool $37,328 in yearly dues, while Mississippi rises as No. 3 with $37,383.

The analysts determined a “clear regional pattern” with seven southern states — including Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Alabama and Tennessee — in the top 10 most affordable addresses.

“The findings suggest that families in parts of the South generally benefit from lower overall costs across several major household expenses compared with families in many coastal and metropolitan areas,” noted study authors.

“For those planning to welcome a baby, the analysis highlights just how much the financial pressures linked with starting or growing a family can differ depending on where they live.”

Here’s a list of the most inexpensive states for bringing up baby.

The 10 most affordable states to raise a baby

  1. Arkansa — $36,386
  2. West Virginia — $37,328
  3. Mississippi — $37,383
  4. Louisiana — $39,356
  5. Kentucky — $39,596
  6. Oklahoma — $39,660
  7. Alabama — $40,270
