Swords and axes have been found at the residence of a man accused of threatening federal politicians on social media, police say.

The 39-year-old was charged after allegedly posting threatening messages to parliamentarians on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, between December 10 and 15 in 2025.

After an investigation linked the man to the social media account, an Australian Federal Police raid of his Woodridge unit, south of Brisbane, uncovered the weapons.

Swords and axes were seized during the search on December 19, along with electronic files, federal police said.

“Police will allege records of the threats on social media were located on the man’s mobile phone and desktop computer,” a federal police statement said.

The man was charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail.

Police had zero tolerance for threats or menacing behaviour towards elected officials, Detective Acting Superintendent Tim Murphy said.

“The AFP supports freedom of speech and political expression because they are keys to a healthy democracy, but we do not condone threats towards anyone in the community,” he said.

“Police have the tools and resources to identify individuals or groups who seek to promote hate and fear within our community, even if they are hiding behind the anonymity of a keyboard, social media or email account.”

National security investigative teams were set up in September to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including the targeting of federal parliamentarians.

The man was set to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Friday.
