An award-winning insurance broker from Sydney’s north has been identified as the victim of a fatal car crash in the US city of Nashville, one of four pedestrians allegedly hit by an 87-year-old driver after running a red light.
Timothy Wedlock, a 58-year-old who served as executive chairman of AEI Insurance Broking Group in North Sydney, was crossing the major intersection at Broadway and 4th Avenue in the downtown district when he was struck on Saturday.
Driver Thomas Cahill allegedly caused life-threatening injuries to two other pedestrians, while a fourth suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
Footage of the crash shows a white sedan travelling through the intersection as oncoming pedestrians crossed the road. Nearby pedestrians rush to the aid of those injured in the collision.
Cahill was travelling with his 90-year-old wife and his wife’s caregiver. The caregiver told investigators she was looking at her phone in the back seat of the car when the crash occurred. Cahill and his wife have both been hospitalised in a stable condition.
AEI Insurance Broking Group confirmed Wedlock’s death on Sunday afternoon (AEST), saying the company was “deeply saddened” by the news. He had marked his 39th anniversary with the business last week.
“Tim was a cornerstone of AEI and a legend of this industry,” AEI managing director and chief executive Noel Kelly wrote to LinkedIn.
“Thirty-nine years in, he still had more energy than anyone in the room. He gave his time freely, to our people, to NIBA [National Insurance Brokers Association], to anyone who asked. We have lost a leader and a mentor but most of all we have lost a mate.”
Wedlock was named NSW Qualified Professional Insurance Broker of the Year in 2004 and 2009, and presented the Lex McKeown Award in 2021 for exceptional service to NIBA and the insurance profession.
In June, he was promoting the insurance profession at a careers evening at Knox Grammar School on Sydney’s upper north shore, where he was a student from 1980 to 1985.
Wedlock was also remembered by the Gordon Rugby Club, where he played more than 200 games, including a stint as captain. Club President Matt Glascott said Wedlock, who also served on the club’s board, was the “epitome of what Gordon Rugby stands for”.
“A wonderful person, respected by all, a man who was forever positive, supportive, and there when it counted. I cannot think of any person who was prouder to be a member of the Gordon Rugby family,” Glascott said on Sunday.
“Vale Tim, you will be missed; however, all of us at Gordon Rugby are better people for having enjoyed your company, your advice and most importantly, your friendship.”
Wedlock is survived by wife Prue, and children Matt and Ash. Gordon is expected to announce a celebration of his life and contribution to the club at a later stage.
Nashville Police are continuing its investigation into the crash. A spokesperson on Sunday said Cahill didn’t show signs of impairment at the time of the crash.
