Eric Swalwell has been given mere hours to resign from Congress or other members will move to expel him.
Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who has put the expulsion threat up to Swalwell’s throat for days, says she’ll fulfill her promise if he doesn’t resign fast enough.
“If Congressman Swalwell has not resigned with the Clerk of the House by 2 PM today, I will continue my resolution regarding his expulsion,” she wrote on X, adding she plans to do the same for Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales if he doesn’t resign.
“His statement about his ‘plan to resign his seat’ is not binding and is wormy,” she added.
Swalwell, his career and image shredded with several rape and sexual misconduct allegations, ended his California gubernatorial campaign and said on Monday that he “plans” to resign his House seat in California’s 14th congressional district.
He suggested the delay would be to “ensure” his staff would be able to “serve the needs of the good people” of his district. The California politician also noted any effort to oust him from Congress without due process is “wrong.”
Luna alleges that Swalwell’s problems are about to get worse. She believes he’ll end up in jail due to a video released showing him kissing an unknown woman.
“I do think he has serious criminal problems on his hands and I do think he might end up in jail,” she said.
An expulsion from Congress would earn Swalwell another rare negative mark against his record, and it’s one he’ll likely look to avoid. Only six US House members have been expelled, the most recent being former Rep. George Santos in 2023 after he was federally indicted on a menagerie of charges.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is looking into an allegation of sexual assault regarding Swalwell.
Swalwell’s presumed exit from Congress will widen the GOP majority to four seats, 217 to 213.
