A traveler may not always be at home or at ease, but in these destinations, feeling unwelcome is underscored.
Experts note that what is perceived as all-out rudeness often amounts to cultural differences, a clash rather than intentional cruelty.
And that culture clash is equally felt; a poll of European tourism experts found that many citizens of the old world view Americans as “rude” and “entitled.”
While rudeness is relative, awful is a human condition, and sweeping generalizations of a country are just that; netizens and travel experts have weighed in on the rudest ports of call around the globe.
Paris
In a surprise to no one, Paris is the number one offender for offensiveness.
“Parisians do not always have the friendliest of attitudes, mainly towards those who don’t speak French,” Jo Hayes, founder of EtiquetteExpert.org, told the Daily Mail.
She explained that although many Parisians can speak and understand English, they refuse to do so on principle.
Per French sources, much of the ire toward American tourists in Paris stems from our aforementioned ignorance of the language, our reticence about the French cheek-kissing greeting, air conditioning requirements, and aversion to offal and other French delicacies
However, Hayes notes that the rudeness may be regional, as places and people beyond the City of Lights have proven to be warm, welcoming, and forgiving toward repressed, overheated, tongue-tied tourists.
Italy
Italy ranks second in the rundown of rudeness.
“I’ve been surprised by how unwelcoming locals have seemed. Many interactions have felt curt or impatient, and a few people even gave my family dirty looks for seemingly no reason other than being American. It’s been disappointing, especially since I’ve traveled quite a bit and never felt this level of tension before,” lamented one Redditor.
“Bear in mind you’re visiting some of the most heavily touristed places in the entire world, so it may lead to some level of local jadedness towards tourists,” said one sage respondent.
Indeed, recent viral footage shows swarms of people across Italy’s hot spots causing human traffic jams, blocking streets to take photos, congregating aimlessly, and leaving some locals trapped in their homes.
In spite, and because of the plague of people encroaching on their country, Americans enjoy something of a mixed reputation among Italians.
“The sort of high-end Americans who stay at the Four Seasons are among my most difficult clients,” one tour guide reported.
“They are self-entitled, rude, demanding and will keep you waiting for hours.”
However, another guide lauded American tourists for leaving big tips and appreciating Italian food, wine and culture.
Germany
Many a Reddit thread is dedicated to the perceived rudeness of Germans towards tourists, particularly the American variety.
“‘Simple interactions with Germans at tourist information desks, train stations and in stores have been met (in most instances) with complete rudeness,” said one commenter who also reported that their requests for help were met with eye rolls, blank stares, and instructions in German despite them leading with the admission that they do not speak it.
However, commenters chalk up this perceived discourtesy to a distaste for idle chatter rather than outright dislike of tourists.
“Germans tend to keep to themselves and are not very interested in small talk. This can seem a bit rude to Americans, but it’s nothing personal.”
South Korea
Several travelers have reported that South Korea is rife with locals who are reluctant to help.
“‘I felt like I was often snapped at, and when walking in the streets, people seemed to barge by. Maybe I was reading the body language and directness the wrong way, but it felt like people had a sharp edge,” Thomas Isacke, who visited South Korea and ventured to the DMZ, told the Daily Mail.
“I recently spent a month in Korea and felt a little unwelcome,” said one Redditor.
“‘People were reluctant to help, lots of pushing and lack of personal space on transport, staff were quite rude when we were not sure of customs and rules.”
Others were quick to provide evidence to the contrary.
“I’ve been to Korea 11 times, and I’ve almost never encountered rude people,” said one
“I was in Korea for 8 nights, and we had the sweetest interactions with Korean people!! They went out of their way to help!!!” said another.
Meanwhile, a long-time expat shared their hot take and some pointed questions.
“Been living here 10 years, and it depends on different things: who you are, what race you are, what you were wearing, how old the people were that were being rude. Also, were you breaking any cultural norms that you should have learned before coming? You can’t come here acting like you would in your home country and think people will be ok with it.”
New York
Americans, of course, are not immune to being rude, and according to the Daily Mail, New Yorkers are top offenders.
This reputation aligns with a Business Insider study that found a whopping 34.3 percent of people believe New Yorkers to be unfriendly.
“Can someone actually explain to me why people in New York are so unhappy? Genuinely baffled at all the rude interactions, like why are people so mean?” questioned Malena Morrison in a recent TikTok.
However, the comments section was richly laden with reasons, rationale, and legitimate points of defense.
“I don’t think we’re unhappy; we just don’t have time to be walking slow or making small talk. We’re always on the go,” said one Gothamite.
“People from NYC are actually some of the kindest people on earth. Etiquette in NYC is not wasting other people’s time or encroaching on their space. Efficiency is favored over pleasantries. We rally together particularly well,” defended another.
“Respectfully, if everyone is rude, you’re not acting right,” dropped a third.
“We don’t have time to coddle strangers,” said a fourth.
And perhaps in the most salient of all, another reminded Malena: “This isn’t Ohio.”
Montenegro
The petite Balkan nation of Montenegro has increasingly become a European hot spot, attracting upwards of 2.5 million visitors a year.
Some of those visitors, however, were nonplussed by the locals.
“From the moment I entered Montenegro, I have been shocked by how rude and unwelcoming people have been. With very few exceptions, I have experienced almost zero basic human courtesy. People stare at you, give you dirty looks, mock you because you’re a tourist, and generally make you feel like you’re bothering them just by being there,” said one Redditor.
“I’m in Montenegro right now. Tomorrow I leave, and I won’t come back,” echoed another.
“The food is good, the landscape beautiful, but I believe many of the people don’t like tourists.”
A more moderate voice offered the following explanation for the country’s chilly attitude toward tourists:
“One of the central sources of Montenegrin historical pride is the long tradition of resisting foreign domination. I’m not defending or ridiculing that mentality; I’m simply saying that understanding this history makes certain aspects of Montenegrins’ attitude toward foreigners (and toward outside authority more generally) make considerably more sense.”
