Travel chaos in California as widespread delays hit major airports

Major airports across California and the US were hammered by weather-related delays Friday morning, snarling travel on both coasts.

San Francisco International Airport was among the hardest hit in California, with delays averaging around 45 minutes earlier in the morning as low clouds disrupted operations, according to the FAA.

Departures at San Diego International were also running nearly an hour behind because of strong winds.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was also hit with widespread delays, while travelers at major hubs including Boston and Miami faced their own headaches.

The disruptions appeared to ease as the morning wore on, with the FAA reporting delays of 15 minutes or less at major airports including SFO and SeaTac.

Travelers were advised to check directly with their airlines for flight-specific delays.

LAX was also listed by the FAA as closed to unscheduled general aviation aircraft unless operators secured permission at least 24 hours in advance. The restriction does not apply to scheduled commercial flights and is part of a longer-running notice, not Friday’s weather disruptions.
