Is it time to get the Tipper stickers out again? “I’m not particularly interested in the musical predilections of former US vice-presidents, so why is it that lately I’ve been bombarded with articles concerning Al Gore rhythms?” asks George Manojlovic of Mangerton.
Speaking of musical predilections, encounters with the Gibb brothers (C8) continue, this time from the house band: “I was a drummer in the 1960s,” writes Adrian Bell of Davistown. “Having moved from jazz to pop and rock, I played many venues including Maroubra and North Bondi Surf Clubs and South Sydney Juniors. At the latter a determined dad brought three kids (with legal approval for entry to licensed premises) to sing. The youngest would have been about 11-years-old. They were phenomenal. The crowd loved them. Originally, The Brothers Gibb (pre ‘Bee Gees’), they moved to 6 O’Clock Rock and Countdown, then the world stage. The boys always showed perfect manners and respect to us as musicians and to club members and staff.”
Viv Munter of Tumbi Umbi is less generous: “In the early ’60s, my now mother-in-law who lived in Eastwood at the time was invited out by one of the Brothers Gibb. Regrettably, she recalls, it wasn’t the good-looking one.”
The dragonfly turnout (C8) isn’t confined to Dermot Perry’s Illawarra region. Rob Horton of East Lindfield went to the Coal Loader at Waverton with his family on Father’s Day “and I noticed a couple of huge swarms of dragonflies which I had never seen before. Such a sight as hundreds flew around in the sun – maybe a Father’s Day surprise?” David Lynch of Hazelbrook reports: “My wife and I noticed a swarm of dragonflies yesterday, on our daily walk. They were not far from our home in an open area. Don’t remember ever seeing that many in one place.”
Time to cop another spray from Peter Riley of Penrith: “There is an urban myth that if you’re caught short while driving the various highways and byways of Australia, it’s perfectly legal to pee on the driver’s side back wheel. Has anyone ever been pinged by the cops and tried to defend themselves in court? ‘It’s the vibe, your honour’.”
Continuing with the outré humour, Natasha Lee of Alexandria ponders: “With news that coffins have been grown out of mushrooms, how long will it take for Australians to start referring to them as ‘Beef Wellington Specials’?”
