A system to reward Brisbane residents who already contribute to the community and want to volunteer at the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games has been announced by the lord mayor.
Under the “volunteer passport” system, existing volunteers will build up “credits” that are recognised when the highly competitive application process opens.
At the 2024 Paris Games, about 300,000 people applied for just 45,000 places.
“Effectively, people who are already volunteering out there are developing stamps in their passport – or volunteering credits – which set them up to be a volunteer in 2032, because we want the absolute best,” Adrian Schrinner told a crowd of industry leaders on Thursday.
“Where are [the best volunteers] found? They’re found in community organisations today. They’re found in the sporting clubs. They’re found out there … turning the sausages on the barbecue. They are helping to raise money, and they are the glue that holds it all together.
“The volunteering program will absolutely be critical.”
The “volunteer passport” was mentioned in the Brisbane Beyond the Games legacy plan unveiled by Brisbane City Council.
A timeline for when it would be rolled out was not announced.
About 60,000 volunteers are sought for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
