Why you should never buy an HVAC system during a heat wave

Why you should never buy an HVAC system during a heat wave

When your AC breaks down during a heat wave, the obvious instinct is to get it fixed as soon as possible.

But buying a new HVAC in the middle of a heat wave can put you in a tight position. You may feel rushed, and since you’re probably not the only one with the same issue, contractors are busier than usual, and appointment slots may be limited.

That does not mean you should suffer through the heat. If your home is dangerously hot, especially if you have elderly family members, young kids, pets or anyone with health conditions, getting help quickly matters. But when it comes to a major HVAC purchase, experts say the worst time to make a big decision is when you are desperate.

“If a customer is calling with a need and they’re in distress because their system is broken — and let’s say that it’s 105 degrees outside — they need somebody there right now,” says Josh Conder, division operations manager for ARS Central Division. “We can’t say, ‘All right, we’ll get out there next week. Just sweat for the next week.’ That doesn’t work well.”

That said, hoping for a quicker turnaround can only mean one thing: higher cost. Here’s what to keep in mind to avoid that and what to do instead:

You may feel pressured to make a fast decision

Heat waves turn HVAC issues into an urgent problem. Suddenly, you’re not thinking clearly about warranties, proper installation, ductwork or even energy efficiency — you’re just hoping to get the problem fixed as soon as possible.

That urgency can make it harder to slow down and compare your options. You might accept the first available quote without thinking things through.

Being quick matters when your home is too hot, but a full HVAC system replacement is a major investment. Rushing that decision can lead to problems later.

According to ARS (a national residential HVAC and home services company), a complete residential HVAC system replacement typically ranges from about $12,000 to $16,000, depending on system type, home size and installation requirements. ARS notes that simpler furnace-only replacements run lower, while premium or high-efficiency systems and complex installs run higher.

That is a lot of money to spend while panicked, overheated and under pressure. The best option is to take a breath and weigh your options instead of being influenced by your current circumstances. It may save you money (and regret).

Contractors may be busier than usual

Heat waves are the peak emergency season for HVAC companies. This means more units are breaking down, and contractor schedules are usually packed.

This can lead you to make a quicker decision or go to a contractor whose quote might not be right for you.

Conder says capacity and urgency matter when customers are in distress, especially when the weather is extreme. That is exactly why it helps to plan before the system fails.

If you wait until the hottest week of the year, you may be shopping at the same time as everyone else. Your best option is to plan and schedule an appointment before disaster strikes.

You may not have time to compare quotes properly

One of the biggest risks is not having enough time to actually compare two different contractor quotes.

According to ARS, two HVAC quotes for the same home can come in thousands of dollars apart, and it’s typically not because one contractor is overcharging. ARS points to equipment tier, efficiency rating, install complexity, and whether work like ductwork or electrical upgrades is included.

Sometimes the cheapest and fastest option isn’t always the best.

Before choosing a quote, compare:

  • The exact equipment included
  • Whether ductwork is included
  • Whether electrical work is included
  • Labor and installation scope
  • Warranty coverage
  • Maintenance or follow-up service
  • Any comfort or money-back guarantees

It’s easy to skip this step when you’re in a rush, but trust us, it will save you thousands if you take a beat just to go through this checklist.

The system may not be sized properly

It’s easy to think when you’re sweating bullets that a larger HVAC system will get you cooling faster, but that’s a common mistake.

“First of all, it needs to be sized properly,” says Gregory Milich, an HVAC expert and college instructor with 43 years of experience. “You can’t just take a three-ton system out and put a four-ton system in because the customer says, ‘I just want more air conditioning.’ It does not work that way.”

If a system is too small, it’s going to struggle to cool your home, but if it’s too large for your space, your room will struggle with humidity issues.

That is why a proper evaluation matters. “We go to the home and do a full energy analysis and a heat-load calculation to determine what really works best for their individual situation, as opposed to just throwing out a blanket price and hoping that it works,” Conder says.

Evaluate before you invest in a new HVAC system.

You may overlook ductwork

“A lot of the real problems come from ductwork,” says Joey Dooley, a general manager at ARS in Texas. “If the ducts are installed improperly, if there are restrictions, if things are sealed badly, then you’re not getting the efficiency you paid for. For example, we can change to higher-efficiency equipment, but if the airflow and duct system aren’t right, you’re not going to get that full efficiency.”

In other words, even a brand-new HVAC system can underperform if the ductwork is leaking, restricted, poorly sealed or not sized correctly.

According to ARS service data, ductwork repair or replacement typically runs between about $2,800 and $4,000 per job, depending on the extent of work and home layout.

Make sure to take ductwork into account when you’re looking for a quote.

Installation quality may suffer if you rush

A new system is only as good as the installation, as an improperly installed HVAC system won’t function properly.

“An HVAC system is not complete until it’s installed correctly,” says Scott Urquhart, an HVAC sales and customer experience expert. “Whether it’s the greatest equipment with the greatest warranty in the world, or it’s the cheapest equipment you’ve ever found or heard of, you have to install it correctly. And if you don’t, you’re going to have problems.”

Dooley says the same thing applies to performance.

“I tell people all the time that the equipment can be great, but if the installation is bad, the performance will be bad,” he says.

During a heat wave, you might be hoping for a rush job, but it’s better for the contractor to take their time. This way you know they’re not ignoring ductwork, sealing, wiring protection or thermostat setup.

You may forget about humidity

When your house is hot, you may focus only on the temperature. But comfort is not just about cooling. Humidity matters too.

“Air conditioning is dehumidification with a byproduct of cooling,” Milich says. “So air conditioning is basically dehumidifying the air.”

If a system is too big or not installed properly, your home can feel sticky, even if the thermostat says the temperature is perfect.

Milich also warns that homeowners should not simply shut off their system when they are not home.

“It doesn’t just have to do with cooling,” he says. “It’s the humidity that will hurt — not hurt you, but hurt your belongings in your house. Humidity soaks into everything.”

That’s an even bigger issue when it’s hot outside.

You may skip important warranty and guarantee questions

Warranties and guarantees may be the last thing on your mind during a heat wave, but we’re here to tell you it’s equally as important.

“The most important advice I can give people shopping for HVAC systems is to make sure to go with a company that offers a money-back guarantee,” he says. “You get to run this system for a year, and if there’s anything you don’t like with it, the company has to make it right.”

If the system does not perform as promised, at least you know the company can come back and fix it.

What to ask before buying during a heat wave

If you do need to buy during a heat wave, do not skip the basics. Ask direct questions before agreeing to the installation.

Ask your HVAC contractor:

Question to ask Why it matters
Whether a heat-load calculation was performed Ensures the system is tailored to your home’s specific energy needs rather than using a blanket price.
Whether the system is the correct size for your home Incorrect sizing leads to poor cooling performance or humidity issues.
Whether the ducts were inspected, sealed or replaced Leaking or poorly sealed ducts can prevent even high-efficiency equipment from performing properly.
Whether airflow was tested after installation Proper airflow is important to achieving the efficiency and comfort levels you are paying for.
Whether the system is removing humidity properly AC is primarily for dehumidification; improper setup leaves the air feeling sticky even at the right temperature.
Whether electrical work is included Electrical upgrades are a main driver of cost differences between quotes and are necessary for safety.
Whether permits are included Permits ensure the installation meets local building codes and safety standards.
What warranties or guarantees apply Protects your major investment if the equipment fails or is not installed correctly.
Whether there is a money-back or comfort guarantee Provides a safety net to ensure the company makes it right if the system doesn’t perform as promised.
What maintenance is required to protect the warranty Missed service can lead to breakdowns and may void the manufacturer’s warranty coverage.

How much could HVAC replacement cost?

If the system needs to be replaced instead of repaired, it’s important to keep the general cost in mind.

According to ARS, a complete residential HVAC system replacement typically ranges from about $12,000 to $16,000, depending on system type, home size and installation requirements.

A central AC split-system replacement typically ranges from about $13,000 to $16,000, with cost driven by system size, efficiency and install complexity.

ARS reports that a combined gas furnace and AC system typically runs between about $13,000 and $16,000, depending on equipment and home requirements.

These are just approximations, but something to keep in mind when your contractor comes in with a quote.

Our verdict: How to avoid buying in a panic

The best way to avoid buying an HVAC system during a heat wave is to pay attention before peak season.

“The importance of maintenance may change a little depending on where you are in the U.S., but biannual maintenance is the baseline,” says Dooley. “Almost every manufacturer recommends it, and I can tell you that a lot of them also effectively require maintenance if you want to protect your warranty.”

If your system is older, noisy, running constantly, failing to control humidity or needing frequent repairs, start getting quotes before the hottest part of the year. That gives you more time to compare options and ask questions without pressure.
