A woman has been charged with the domestic violence murder of an elderly man in the state’s north-east.
The body of an 81-year-old man was found in a creek on a property in Teven, near Ballina, about noon on Thursday, NSW Police said in a statement.
A 51-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and taken to Lismore Base Hospital. Police said she was later released from hospital and taken to Lismore Police Station where she was charged with murder (DV).
Police said the woman and the elderly man were known to each other.
She was refused bail and appeared from prison via video link in the Bail Division Court on Saturday morning.
Her legal representative Anthony Stewart, told the court that she suffers from schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, Asperger’s, ADHD and autism, and receives a pension.
He said he was informed that she had asked to see a doctor. “I went through the facts and explained that the facts provide that the client came from hospital, but … she explains she has not seen a doctor … my other instructions are to [ask] if it can be brought as early as possible.”
Speaking briefly from prison, the woman, wearing a gown, told the court: “I haven’t seen a doctor yet. When am I going to get a chance to see a doctor? … I need to be in hospital.”
She did not apply for bail, and it was formally refused. She is due to face Lismore Local Court on October 28.
