A former television news anchor has admitted to murdering her 80-year-old mother on Halloween last year at their Kansas home after believing she was possessed by the devil.
Angelynn “Angie” Mock pleaded guilty on Friday to one count of first-degree murder for fatally stabbing her mother, Anita Avers, at their shared Wichita home on Oct. 31, 2025, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Mock, 48, faces life in prison under the plea deal, with a chance at parole after 25 years, prosecutors said.
Mock previously worked as a morning news anchor at KTVI in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015 and later at KOKH in Oklahoma City, but was working in sales at a data management software company at the time of the murder.
The Wichita Police Department responded to the home Mock shared with Avers and her stepfather around 7:50 a.m. on Oct. 31 last year to find Avers with multiple stab wounds, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Following her arrest, Mock made multiple statements claiming she believed her mother was the devil and told investigators she killed her to “save herself,” according to the affidavit.
Mock told investigators she went to her mother’s room to talk about an upcoming job interview at KSN and found her sharpening knives.
She claimed her mother came at her with a blade and the two fought — but Mock said she overpowered her and pushed her back.
She then claimed that her mother said, “I know you’re f–king Jesus Christ,” and spewed “venom” as she tried to back away from her.
Mock said she then grabbed the knife, pinned her mother down and stabbed her — claiming she had no choice but to do so to save herself, according to the affidavit.
“I had to kill her, she wasn’t going to stop,” Mock said, according to the affidavit.
Mock was also heard talking to herself when police arrived on scene, making statements suggesting she believed her mother was the devil.
“I’d kill that bitch to have my mom back any day. I don’t even know who she is anymore. I know, I believe she’s the devil,” Mock said, according to the affidavit.
Officers found multiple kitchen knives and a cheese grater laid out on a pillow next to Avers’ body on the bed.
“All the utensils had blood on them… the top sheet had at least 12 holes in the top half of the sheet, consistent with those caused by a knife,” the court documents stated.
Mock’s stepfather, Barry Avers — who was at work during the killing — told investigators she had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and suffered from delusions and depression, according to the affidavit.
He told investigators that Mock was on medication, though he was unaware of the specific type and only assumed she was taking it as prescribed. He also noted that Mock was prone to angry outbursts but that he never considered her violent or felt threatened by her.
Barry told investigators that Mock frequently slipped into delusional states, claiming people around her were “robots” and “not real people,” according to the affidavit. It’s unclear when these outbursts happened.
She also claimed to be spiritual, spoke to God and at times called herself the Anti-Christ — growing angry when others didn’t believe her. On one occasion, he said, she told him: “I could blow everyone up if needed to.”
Barry said years earlier, an explosive outburst had led to police being called and Mock being held at a psychiatric hospital for roughly two weeks, according to the affidavit.
The most recent episode her stepfather could recall was three or four weeks before the killing — when she erupted at family members during a card game.
Her stepfather described Mock and her mother as having a “back-and-forth relationship as most mothers and daughters but were close.”
In January, Judge Jeffrey Goering ruled Mock was not mentally fit to stand trial and ordered her to a state psychiatric hospital for evaluation and treatment, putting the criminal proceedings on hold.
Following her guilty plea Friday, Mock is set to face sentencing on Oct. 5.
