Fairytale destinations across Europe that look too magical to be real

Some of Europe’s most magical destinations look like they’ve been lifted straight from a fairytale – from hilltop castles rising above forests to medieval villages glowing under Christmas lights.

Rather than carefully built film sets, though, they’re real places where people still live, work and go about everyday life among centuries-old streets and landscapes.

Travel website European Best Destinations has revealed its 2026 ranking of Europe’s fairytale destinations, combining expert picks with votes from travellers around the world.

Starting with more than 4,200 places across the continent, the list was narrowed down to 68 based on factors including history, atmosphere, originality, culture and the overall visitor experience.

Travellers then had their say, selecting their top three destinations and helping decide the final ranking. The result is a mix of famous landmarks and under-the-radar escapes, with 12 new entries making the shortlist this year – including Riga in Latvia and Craiova in Romania for the first time.

From iconic European gems to unexpected discoveries, these are the fairytale destinations set to be on travellers’ radars in 2026.

Eltz Castle, Germany

Hidden among the forested hills of western Germany, Eltz Castle is “fabulous”, said European Best Destinations, and it certainly looks like something straight out of a children’s storybook.

Perched above the Moselle Valley, the medieval fortress has belonged to the same family for more than 850 years and, remarkably by European standards, has never been destroyed by war.

Its fairytale towers and turrets are the main draw, but step inside and you’ll find lavishly furnished rooms, suits of armour, centuries-old tapestries and silverware that offer a glimpse into life at one of Europe’s best-preserved castles.

Mont-Saint-Michel, France

Rising dramatically from the tidal flats off the Normandy coast, Mont-Saint-Michel is one of France’s most spectacular sights. Crowned by its soaring Benedictine abbey, the UNESCO-listed island has captivated visitors for centuries.

Wander its narrow medieval streets, climb to the abbey at the summit and watch the tides transform the landscape around it.

For the most magical experience, arrive early in the morning or stay until evening, when the day-trippers have left and the island is at its peaceful best.

Tossa de Mar, Spain

Tossa de Mar offers a different side to the Costa Brava. While much of the coastline is known for busy beach resorts, this former fishing village is crowned by the impressively preserved medieval walls of Vila Vella, which overlook golden sands and the sparkling Mediterranean.

Spend time wandering the cobbled streets before climbing to the old watchtowers for sweeping sea views. It’s easy to see why artist Marc Chagall famously dubbed the town the “Blue Paradise” – and why artists are still inspired to come here in their droves.

The Dark Hedges, Northern Ireland

One of Northern Ireland’s most photographed sights, the Dark Hedges is an atmospheric avenue of twisted beech trees planted in the 18th century to frame the entrance to a Georgian estate.

Fans of ‘Game of Thrones’ will recognise it as doubling as the King’s Road, but it’s worth visiting even if you’ve never seen the series.

Arrive early to experience the eerie tunnel of trees before the crowds, then continue along the Causeway Coast to nearby highlights including the Giant’s Causeway and dramatic Dunluce Castle.

Riga, Latvia

Riga may not have the polished fairytale feel of some European capitals, but that’s exactly what makes it so appealing. The Latvian capital blends medieval streets and church spires with one of the world’s finest collections of Art Nouveau architecture.

Start in the cobbled Old Town, where colourful guild houses surround the striking House of the Black Heads, before climbing St Peter’s Church for panoramic views across the rooftops and the Daugava River.

After dark, the historic centre takes on an entirely different atmosphere, with softly lit streets that are perfect for an evening wander.
