Heartbreaking details emerge after newborn baby found dead in California

Harrowing details have emerged in the mysterious case of a dead baby found in a beachside California town over the weekend.

Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies discovered the body shortly after 8:30 a.m. Saturday after a caller reported an infant had been found alongside a rural road outside Moss Landing. 

Firefighters who responded to the call from the 100 block of Struve Road pronounced the infant dead at the scene.

One of the first witnesses to discover the deceased infant has come forward about what he found.

The agricultural worker, who declined to give his name, told KSBW he “saw a lot of blood, and the umbilical cord was still attached.”

The man made the shocking discovery next to a strawberry field in California’s Central Coast farming region.

A memorial has sprung up at the site where the unidentified child was found, with flowers and two small rubber ducks left in the baby’s memory.

Cops are now searching for the person who left the baby there. The Monterey County Sheriff’s office has not returned The California Post’s calls for comment or provided any details on the investigation.

Local resident Carla Mata, who lives down the road from where the baby was discovered, said investigators swarmed the area Saturday.

“There were a lot of forensic investigators as well, so, yeah, it was packed with police. It was a sad day, honestly,” Mata told KSBW.

Monterey County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene shortly after 8:30 a.m., secured the area and questioned fieldworkers who were picking strawberries nearby, according to witnesses.

Frank Sanchez, who also lives nearby, said he hopes the mother of the child comes forward.

“She could’ve had so many other options,” Sanchez told the news station. “But there’s no need for that. That’s an innocent baby.”

Authorities have not said whether an autopsy has been completed on the child.

Monterey County cops discovered another body in the Moss Landing area on Saturday about 17 miles from where the baby was found. Police have not identified the second corpse or said whether the two cases are related.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about the newborn or the identity of the baby’s mother or parents to contact investigators.
