Language Immersion Travel Is Having a Moment — Here Are the Best Programs for Adults

Language immersion programs abroad are becoming one of the fastest-growing forms of slow travel, with more and more adults and retirees booking trips that combine daily language classes, cultural experiences and longer stays designed to build real-world fluency while living like a local.

What Is a Language Immersion Program Abroad?

A language immersion program is a one- to two-week (or longer) trip where travelers split their time between language classes and cultural activities in a foreign country. Most are designed for adults — some specifically for travelers 50 and older — and combine customized coursework with group excursions like museum visits, cooking lessons or dance classes.

The format has been growing across Latin America and Europe, particularly among older adults and retirees, and it aligns with the slow travel trend of deeper, more meaningful stays abroad. While most foreign language schools market to college-aged students, the majority welcome adults of any age.

Cleo Grim, travel adviser for StudyTravel, a Netherlands-based language agency, told AARP: “We speak to many students 50 and over who want to pick up a language they have studied in the past,” adding that students have long-held interest in the country and language and “would like to share this passion with like-minded people.”

Which Language Immersion Programs Are Best for Adults?

Six standout programs serve adult learners across Europe, Latin America and Asia, with prices ranging from about $420 per week to more than $13,000 for luxury retreats. Each pairs structured classroom hours with cultural immersion built into daily life.

EF Language Year Abroad runs flexible intensive courses from two weeks to a full year for young professionals and adults. Destinations include Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo and Seoul, with highly customizable course options.

Maximo Nivel offers highly rated Spanish immersion programs in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru, with built-in homestays and volunteer opportunities. Pricing runs between $600 and $800 per week depending on the program.

Fluenz, better known as a language learning app, also runs in-person immersion programs in luxury destinations including Costa Rica, Mexico City and Bogota. In-person immersion and bootcamp retreats typically range from $4,100 to $13,730 per person depending on location, duration and room occupancy.

How Much Does a Spanish Immersion Program in Costa Rica Cost?

Spanish immersion in Costa Rica averages around $500 per week at adult-focused schools like Tico Lingo, with homestay accommodation included. Maximo Nivel’s Costa Rica programs run higher, between $600 and $800 per week.

Tico Lingo, based in Heredia, focuses entirely on adult conversational Spanish. Programs run one to 16 weeks and include 20 hours of weekly group classes — four hours a day, five days a week — alongside accommodation with a local host family. Each student takes a placement exam before starting to ensure proper course placement, and conversational classes give students the chance to practice with locals. Heredia puts students about a half hour from San Jose.

What Are the Best Language Immersion Programs in Europe?

For French, Actilangue in Nice puts students along the French Riviera with courses starting from 360 euros for two weeks. For Italian, Babilonia Italian Language School in Taormina, Sicily, pairs language classes with cultural programs and host-family homestays.

Actilangue places adults in level-appropriate courses based on a written grammar test and a personal interview, and offers general and intensive French classes along with DELF diplomas. Courses range from two to 24 weeks with options of 20, 25 or 30 lessons per week, with discounted rates for longer stays. Average cost runs about $420 per week.

Babilonia, located on Sicily — the largest Mediterranean island — pairs Italian instruction with cultural programs in literature, history, cooking, ceramics and golf. Classes are capped at 12 students, with one-on-one lessons also available. Accommodation is provided with a local host family that serves breakfast and dinner daily, and summer immersion programs for adults are offered as well.

Where Can Adults Take a Mandarin Immersion Program?

Hutong School offers Mandarin immersion in both Beijing and Shanghai, with more than 10 years of experience teaching international students. Programs run around $500 per week, with courses lasting from one week to one year.

Students study four hours a day in classes of no more than eight people. The fee includes 24/7 support, visa assistance, cultural activities and free one-on-one tutoring sessions — useful for adults navigating a tonal language and a new alphabet at the same time.

Are Language Immersion Programs Worth It for Travelers Over 50?

Yes — language immersion programs are increasingly built around adult learners, including retirees and travelers 50 and older who want to revive a language they once studied. Many schools welcome adults of any age even when their marketing skews younger.

The appeal lines up with the slow travel movement: deeper, longer stays that mix learning with cultural exploration rather than checklist sightseeing. Homestays, small class sizes (often capped between eight and 12 students) and excursions built into the week give older travelers structured social contact and built-in conversation practice with locals.
