SSI recipients will see their first August payment early — here’s when to expect your check

Check please!

Check your mailboxes because Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are heading to homes early due to a bit of a calendar quirk. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will issue August checks on July 31, instead of the first of the new month.

The early payment is typical, as the SSA will not send payments on a weekend, and it does not mean it’s extra cash. SSI checks are always distributed on the first of every month, and since August 1 is on a Saturday, checks will go out a day early on Friday.

Recipients will see an early check two more times this year — one in October and one in December. This is because November 1 falls on a Sunday this year, which means beneficiaries will receive their checks on Friday, October 30.

Since January 1 is a holiday, folks will see two checks in December.

The schedule for the rest of 2026 is:

  • Friday, July 31 (for August)
  • Tuesday, September 1
  • Thursday, October 1
  • Friday, October 30 (for November)
  • Tuesday, December 1
  • Thursday, December 31 (for January 2027)

SSI is a program within Social Security and provides monthly payments to those with disabilities as well as older adults and disabled children. Millions of monthly benefits are issued each month and are based on age or medical condition, limited income, and few financial resources that factor into each check.

To qualify, you must meet a few factors, according to the SSA. You must be a US citizen or national or a “noncitizen in one of certain alien classifications,” the SSA said.

In addition, you must be at least 65, blind or disabled, have limited income and have limited resources. For more information on income levels and eligibility, head to the Social Security website.

For those receiving Social Security, a program providing financial benefits to eligible workers after they reach retirement age, payments are staggered throughout the month and issued on Wednesdays, rolling out three times a month based on your birthday.

For example, birthdays from the 1st-10th will get checks on the second Wednesday of each month. Birthdays 11th–20th will receive theirs on the third Wednesday of each month; while birthdays 21st–31st can expect theirs on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

To be eligible for payments, you must meet two main rules: reach age 62 or older and accumulate 40 work credits (equal to 10 years of work) by paying Social Security taxes. Additionally, you must be a US citizen or a lawfully present noncitizen.

The Social Security schedule for the rest of 2026 based on your birthday:

August

September

October

November

  • 10 (early due to Veterans Day)
  • 18
  • 25

December

Those receiving Social Security may also be seeing a boost next year thanks to the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), which is projected to be 3.8%. The COLA is the yearly increase aimed at helping Social Security keep up with rising prices.

The increase is based on the Senior Citizens League (TSCL) — a non-partisan advocacy group that makes very accurate COLA projections. COLA is always determined by the CPI-W’s percentage increase in the third quarter of the year from July, August and September and will be announced in October.
