Under-the-radar California river winds boaters through vineyards, redwood forests and beaches

Float on.

We’re in the waning weeks of summer, and the time is prime for river floating.

While Sonoma County has long been a destination for food and wine, many Californians overlook the lazy currents of the majestic Russian River which winds through vineyards, redwood forests and driftwood-dotted beaches.

In peak summer and early fall, the Russian is in a leisurely lull, sometimes averaging less than one mile per hour making it an ideal time to float or paddle the waterway.

However, winter rains can swell the river to a swift and dangerous thunder, which is why rental outposts typically close from November through April.

Get it while you can, folks.

Though the headwaters of the Russian River are in Mendocino, the most popular put-ins are further downstream in rustic river towns where charm is in high supply.

In Forestville, purveyors including Burke’s Canoe Trips and Russian River Tubes offer vessels of every variety and the chance to reconnect to the simple pleasures of days gone by.

“It could be 1946 when you’re paddling,” Ted Schroeder, longtime manager at Burke’s, told the LA Times.

The only Russian River tubing route Sonoma County Parks recommends is the 2-mile stretch from Forestville’s Steelhead Beach to Sunset Beach, which experts say takes about 4.5 hours.

The route snakes through redwood groves while otters, blue heron, and egrets are known to make cameo appearances.

Because sometimes counties come correct, Sonoma County also runs a $5 shuttle bus service that runs every half hour on weekends.

For those who chill heavy and rise early, the fare is valid all day, meaning you’re free to take another run before sundown.

Visitors can also set their own shuttle.

However you make it to the river, safety experts underscore the importance of using a durable, river-rated tube, noting that pool floats aren’t designed for river use and can puncture easily on rocks or submerged debris.

Translation: leave your inflatable unicorn at home and pony up for proper gear.

In the nearby resort town of Guerneville in Western Sonoma, century-old Johnson’s Beach offers rentals for day floaters and cabin and bungalow accommodations for overnight boaters.

Inner tubes are available for $10 a day while a canoe will set you back $75.

A popular route is Johnson’s Beach to Dubrava Beach (sometimes called Guernewood Park Beach). This stretch takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Parking is limited at Dubrava, but visitors can easily walk back to Johnson’s from the take-out.

Visitors seeking a bit more octane can book canoe trips with Russian River Adventures that follow the river from Healdsburg’s Memorial Beach to either Crow Bar or Wohler Bridge, journeys of four and nine miles, respectively.

Solitude seekers can also opt to take the shuttle in the opposite direction, inverting the route and cutting down on crowds.

After working up both appreciation and an appetite on the river, Healdsburg’s famed Healdsburger offers the rich reward of red meat.
