Will Trent concluded its fourth season with another shocking death after the show already lost a cast member.
During the Tuesday, May 5, episode of the hit ABC series, Angie (Erika Christensen) finally gave birth but her happiness was short-lived because her husband, Seth (Scott Foley), died after collapsing in the hospital.
“It’s just Game of Thrones out here,” Iantha Richardson, who plays Faith, joked during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly. “I have no clue if death is imminent on this show [but] I hope not.”
Richardson, 35, recalled the reasoning she heard about Seth’s death, adding, “It sets up a beautiful emotional arc for people in the coming season of what’s to come. So there’s a lot to look forward to.”
Despite the potential onscreen growth, Richardson acknowledged how “hard” it is to see cast members leave the show.
“Losing people like that definitely keeps you on your toes. Nobody expected to lose one person — let alone two — in very different genres of what the show has. But to lose two in a matter of three weeks is just gut wrenching over and over again,” she noted. “What is expected is a lot of emotional roller-coasters. I don’t know if it’s death necessarily but I hope not. I do know that there is a lot of emotional recoil that will come in the season to come.”
Based on a book by Karin Slaughter, Will Trent follows a special agent at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who was abandoned at birth and grew up in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. Will (Ramon Rodríguez) now relies on his unique perspective while pursuing justice, resulting in the highest clearance rate in the GBI.
In addition to Rodríguez, the show stars Richardson, Christensen, Jake McLaughlin, Sonja Sohn and Kevin Daniels. Season 4 threw viewers for a loop when Sohn’s character, Amanda, was killed off after being on the show since the beginning.
“I am never too comfortable in any space because you really just never know. But I don’t think [a possible death for Faith] is at the forefront of my mind,” Richardson told Us about her personal reaction to multiple cast exits within a matter of weeks. “I don’t think that would happen. But who knows. If it’s meant for the greater good of Will Trent then I’m sure there will be a great reason behind it and it’ll all happen in the best way. But I hope not.”
Looking ahead, Richardson expressed excitement at the story possibilities in season 5. She specifically weighed in on how Will and Angie raising her baby — while living together again — will play out for the rest of the team.
“I do think it feels communal again. We don’t know next season exactly what’s going to happen but we’re functioning on a family-like level. This baby lost its father and although Will and Angie are figuring out their stuff, you always need other hands,” the actress said. “I would hope that Faith would step in and be like, ‘Give me the baby.’ We’re going to figure it out all together.”
Richardson also teased how the show will return back to basics, saying, “I’m really excited about the sex trafficking case. I think that is very timely and nuanced. It is something that needs to be highlighted because I don’t think a lot of people know — as much as it’s talked about — the ins and outs of it. There’s something there to really discuss.”
She continued: “To have my character have something [to] chew on in that nature, I am so excited. Especially as a Black woman, the majority of these cases are from little Black girls from what I’m learning. … If we get in the midst of it, we could find somebody for Faith to pair with and that would be awesome as well. I would love to see that because she needs a successful love story.”
Speaking of love stories, Richardson spoke with Us about the surprising — and overwhelming — support for Faith and Ormewood (McLaughlin).
“I was super surprised because there’s a nuance in there that I really enjoy. There is such thing as a platonic love with somebody who is completely different from you,” she explained about her hope for the duo. “Your soul gravitates to the opposite of what mine does but you’re a great human. I don’t know if this would work romantically and I think she’s aware enough — given her circumstances — to know that.”
Richardson wondered if viewers can find it “hard to differentiate” platonic potential and romantic love.
“There’s so many different types of friendships and relationships and love that we have in this life. I love the fact that this is a part of her journey,” she added. “I think it should be platonic. That’s just a nuance that deserves to be had with her relationships at work.”
In response to Us‘ comment about how Ormewood’s looks at Faith were to blame for the new interest, Richardson quipped that McLaughlin needed to “tone it down.”
“He’s a great actor and he is amazing. We constantly have this conversation too,” she concluded. “We both are like, ‘Yeah, just keep them as friends.’”
Will Trent has been renewed for season 5 and is currently streaming on Hulu.
