A mother who careened into a dam in northern NSW, killing her 11-year-old daughter, has been charged with drug driving nearly nine months after the fatal crash sparked an outpouring of community grief and tens of thousands of dollars in donations.
The woman, 50, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, received almost $45,000 through a GoFundMe campaign established after the tragedy near Tenterfield in September last year.
Police allege the woman was driving her black SUV under the influence of drugs when the vehicle left the struck a tree and plunged into a dam.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the woman’s daughter was pulled unresponsive from the water.
The girl died at the scene, and her mother was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
On Monday, the mother walked into Tamworth Police Station and was given a court attendance notice.
She has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death while under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving occasioning death by driving in a manner dangerous, negligent driving occasioning death, driving under the influence of drugs, and driving with an illicit drug present in her blood.
She is due to appear before Tenterfield Local Court on July 30.
