Police have arrested a man in Melbourne’s CBD after a verbal threat was made that compelled the city council to ask its staff to stay away from the area.
The threat, details of which are unknown, prompted the City of Melbourne to text staff to stay away due to “the possible threat of an incident occurring on Bourke Street tonight” after 7pm.
A spokesperson said the council sent the text at the behest of police, but police have not yet elaborated on the nature of the threat or whether people other than Melbourne council staff were at risk.
The man was arrested on Swanston Street about 7pm.
“Police have identified a person of interest, and the investigation remains ongoing,” police said in a statement.
