Police have issued a timely reminder to drivers after a woman was arrested overnight and charged with drink-driving after she rolled her car while trying to dodge an oncoming freight train.
The incident happened just after 11pm on Thursday night in Midvale, only a few suburbs from the spot in Guildford where a truck was hit by a commuter train on Wednesday.
Police said the woman was driving a Suzuki Grand Vitara wagon on Morrison Road near Harold Road when she failed to stop at a crossing while the red lights were flashing.
They then allege she drove around the boom gates and into the path of an oncoming freight train.
“She then took evasive action, causing the vehicle to roll and come to rest upside down beside the railway line,” a WA Police spokeswoman said.
They allege the woman had been drinking at the time.
Police were called to the scene and issued the woman with a disqualification notice before charging her with driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
“This week is National Road Safety Week, and the WA Police Force reminds all road users to take
responsibility for their actions and commit to safer driving behaviours to help reduce the number of
serious and fatal crashes,” a WA Police spokesperson said.
“Throughout the week, WA Police officers will continue to undertake enforcement activity targeting the
Fatal Five.
“These behaviours remain the leading contributors to death and serious injury on Western
Australian roads and include speeding, impairment by alcohol or drugs, failure to wear seatbelts, fatigue
and distraction.”
The woman is due to appear in Midland Magistrates Court on June 24.
